Launch of ‘Digitizing Global Trade’ project in Kenya

September 2021

Simplifying and digitising export procedures in Kenya – KenTrade, Deutsche Post DHL Group and GIZ kick-start project activities to reduce time for exporters.

The Kenya Trade Network (KenTrade) becomes an official partner in the ‘Digitizing Global Trade’ (DGT) initiative that is financed by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation (BMZ) and Deutsche Post DHL Group (DPDHL) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and DPDHL in Kenya under the aegis of the develoPPP programme.

The project in Kenya aims to simplify and digitise export procedures and documentary requirements for the exports of avocado and fish. It thereby reduces the time for exporters to fulfill and comply with all necessary export requirements.

On 7 September 2021, the KenTrade Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Amos Wangora and Mr. Bernd Lakemeier, the GIZ Programme Director for Sustainable Economic Development, Employment and Digitalisation, signed a Letter of Intent to formalise the cooperation.

“The project will be an integral part of the implementation of trade facilitation measures and we as GIZ on behalf of German Development Cooperation are looking very much forward to working with all the partners to support achievement of export development goals with a strong focus on capacity building for SMEs,” said GIZ Programme Director Bernd Lakemeier.

Kentrade CEO Amos Wangora added: “The project will leverage on the InfoTradeKenya Portal in the publication of the simplified step-by-step guide on export procedures for Fish and Avocado and increase awareness of the portal among the business community.”

The role of the private sector was highlighted by Andrew Mutuma, the DHL Express Kenya Managing Director: “The project will follow a public-private cooperation approach, making use of the private sector’s experience, best practices and practical advice on trade facilitation issues.”

Next to Kenya, the DGT initiative is being implemented with projects in Cambodia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Montenegro and Rwanda.
