Founding Workshop of the German Alliance for Trade Facilitation in Berlin
On October 14, 2016, the founding meeting of the Alliance took place in Berlin.
Since January 2016, preliminary discussions had taken place with companies and associations in order to examine the interest in a German Alliance for Trade Facilitation. Positive feedback from customs working groups and BMZ events finally laid the basis for the foundation of the Alliance.
Twenty-five participants from the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, as well as representatives from companies and business associations attended the maiden conference. In separate rounds, the participants focused on the formation of the Alliance, the technical and strategic strengthening of the project portfolio and the adoption of a governance structure and compliance guidelines.
Already in advance, the participating companies and associations were able to submit proposals for countries in which they would like to take action and tackle trade barriers. At the center of all negotiations and projects will be the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and development cooperation objectives. The involvement of national governments and businesses as well as policy coherence are fundamental to the Alliance’s project implementation.
