10th Working Meeting of the German Alliance for Trade Facilitation

November 2021

About 30 partners of the network came together virtually for the 10th working meeting of the German Alliance. Next to exchanging on current and planned projects, there were time and occasion to retrospect the past 5 years of the Alliance.

In his opening remarks, Tammo Strümpler, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), drew attention on two anniversaries: 60 years of the BMZ and 5 years of the German Alliance for Trade Facilitation. What do both anniversaries have in common? Fair and open trade has always been of high relevance to leverage economic development – and still is today. With support from the German Government, companies, business associations and ministries around the world come together in the Alliance to pursue these goals. The close cooperation with all partners contributes significantly to measurable project successes.

At the working meeting the Alliance’s partners…

… exchanged on ongoing activities, ‘lessons learnt’ and concrete project results. In Indonesia, the processing time of import documents was reduced by an average of 4 days per import license in 2021. Simplification approaches for customs procedures have also been developed in Ukraine, Serbia and North Macedonia. The rate of immediate release for express shipments has doubled in North Macedonia.

… received updates about the status of new project ideas. Hereby they discussed common thematic areas of focus within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

… reflected on processes and working formats within the Alliance and received information from the Steering Committee. The participants confirmed the updated Code of Conduct.

… discussed trade-related issues in the current global context. Among other topics, the participants exchanged initial experiences in preparing for new procedures related to the Brexit.

During the meeting Susanne Wolfgarten was introduced as the new Head of the Program. Her predecessor Mattia Wegmann is taking over new responsibilities within GIZ in Albania.
